Historic agreement between Jordan and Israel brings benefit

Jordan has become the latest country in the Middle East to sign an aviation agreement with Israel to open up potential routes between and across the two countries. The move will also have environmental benefits.

The agreement will enable flights to cross over both countries’ airspace. The issue has been under discussion for some time, but was accelerated following recent diplomatic breakthroughs in the region when the UAE signed a cooperation agreement with Israel.
Saudi Arabia allowed an El Al passenger jet from Tel Aviv to cross its airspace to visit Abu Dhabi in September.
This latest move will enable Gulf airlines to overfly Israeli airspace with the potential to shorten journeys to Europe and North America. Israel’s transport ministry said this would “lead to significant fuel savings, reduce pollutant emissions and contribute to the environment.”
According to Routes Online, Dubai’s Emirates and Israel’s Israir are hoping to begin services between Dubai and Tel Aviv’s Ben Gurion airport.
