AIRPORT SHOW: Raven swoops to protect against bird strikes

At the far side of the Airport Show exhibition is a large shiny black Mercedes Sprinter, with extraordinary large red antennae blossoming from the roof. This is the Raven Black stand, and the vehicle is a mobile unit designed to protect airports and aircraft from bird strikes.

The system uses a special nonlinear parametric acoustic effect, which causes a long-term avoidance reaction in birds, without causing them harm. On sighting incoming flocks, the mobile unit can be deployed in less than three minutes on arrival near the airfield providing a protective corridor along the runway and glide path, significantly reducing the probability of accidents during take off and landing. The system can also be used by security staff as a non-lethal deterrent in confrontational situations.

Inside the vehicle is a device that includes two positional multi-frequency phased acoustic arrays, a powerful LED spotlight and a video surveillance camera. The system can also be equipped with laser modules. R

Raven Black also has a range of static models, but the sight of the roof opening, and the huge red large emitters rising out of the interior adds a spirit of sheer intimidation to simply scaring away birds.
