Zero2infinity plans to launch balloon trips to edge of space from UAE

A new company is planning to launch human and robotic helium balloon missions to the very edge of space from within the UAE.

Founded by MIT graduate José Mariano López-Urdiales, zero2infinity has been in discussion with local aerospace consultants about the possibility of developing high-altitude balloon flights from the Emirates.

“With the UAE being one of the fastest-growing technological areas and the ultimate luxury holiday destination, a balloon trip to the edge of space is a perfect match to the nation’s future,” said López-Urdiales.

Zero2infinity’s maiden vehicle, called “The bloon”, was conceived to climb to an altitude of 36 km.

A bloon flight consists of three stages. The first is the ascent using a stratospheric helium balloon attached to a pressurized pod. This would take three hours. The second stage involves a two-hour cruise at 30-36 km altitude.

The final phase is the descent, using parachutes to safely bring the pod to a controlled landing.

The pod would carry four passengers with two pilots and, thanks to panoramic windows, provide a breathtaking view.

“A ride on zero2infinity’s 'bloon' is non-polluting, very gentle and extremely safe,” said López-Urdiales. “No rockets, no high accelerations, no supersonic reentry, no special physical conditions needed and, unlike other space access providers, no political restrictions.

“Until now, no other Arab nation has conducted crewed space missions from its own soil.”

Zero2infinity is on track to launch the first crewed flight in about a year's time. It carried out several successful robotic flights flying a capsule capable of life support from Spain in November 2012.

The company is currently seeking local partners in the UAE.
