UAE aims to develop 'world class' statistics from nation's aviation industry

Statistics from the aviation industry in the UAE are to reach new levels following a top level meeting held between the UAE General Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA) and the National Bureau of Statistics (NBOS).

The meeting, held at the Sheikh Zayed Air Navigation Centre to discuss the GCAA’s  aviation statistics program. was attended by high profile executives from both the GCAA, and NBOS as well as Department of Transport Abu Dhabi and Departments of Civil Aviation in Dubai, Sharjah, Fujairah and Ras Al Khaimah.

Agenda highlights included discussion of ways to improve cooperation between GCAA and the NBOS, dedicating all available resources and capabilities to take their mutual efforts to new levels. The step is in line with the organisations’ objectives to develop capabilities such as benchmarking at the regional and global level, improved ability to anticipate socio economic demands and meet operational challenges. 
Director general of GCAA,  Saif Mohammad Al Suwaidi, (pictured right)  asserted the Authority’s commitment towards ongoing improvement and development in the country, reiterating the importance of cooperation with the NBOS.
This collaboration would contribute to better methods of data collection, management and usage as well as coordinating and sharing best practices in setting up databases, which would ultimately reflect positively on the UAE’s civil aviation sector, he said.
The  director general of NBOS Rashid Khamis Al Suwaidi, pointed out that coordination with GCAA forms an integral part of the Bureau’s strategy aiming to boost cooperation and offer technical support and expertise in the field of statistics to all public departments, highlighting the main role of the Authority as a strategic partner in those efforts.
He said NBOS is seeking to further develop the current relationships with its partners on the federal and local levels, as well as the private sector, applying world-class practices in the process in order to establish administrative records that provide continuously updated statistical data, serving the needs of decision makers.
The meeting agreed that the key objectives of transport and air traffic statistics were:
1-        Building a database of key aviation indicators.
2-        Measuring the contributions of air transport activities in the GDP and overall economic growth
3-        Updating the current economic data on the sector
4-        Providing necessary data on transport activities, to prepare and serve national accounts and foreign trade, in addition to other vital economic sectors.
