The airline – Syphax Airlines – is to operate Airbus A319 aircraft and according to Tunisian newspaper Al Mahgreb, the idea for the project came from a conference which took place in the Tunisian industrial city of Sfax in May this year which discussed ways to activate regional development and employment in the transport sector.

According to the newspaper electronics and engineering entrepreneur Mahmoud Frikha is behind the company.  The owner of Telnet told Al Maghreb that Syphax Airlines was born as a Tunisian company based in Sfax, the second biggest city in Tunisia. The company plans to reinvigorate southern Tunisian economy and link to world markets through passenger and merchandise transport.

Frikha told the newspaper that the airline will offer a mix between scheduled and charter operations but believes the market will open more up when Tunisia enters the  European Open Sky programme.
