The ruler of Sharjah, Dr Sheikh Sultan Bin Mohammad Al Qasimi, and Sheikh Sultan Bin Mohammad Bin Sultan Al Qasimi, Crown Prince and Deputy Ruler of Sharjah, inaugurated the new runway at a special ceremony.
The 4,060metre long runway is A380 compliant but more importantly for Sharjah it is equally capable of handling the largest of the Antonov freighters.
For Gama Aviation – operators of the airport growing FBO, it is also ideal for private aircraft including the 747-8 selected by several Gulf states as the head of state aircraft.
Sharjah has handled more than 7.2 million passengers in the first seven months of the year, up nearly 14.5 per cent compared to the 6.3 million passengers handled over the same period last year, according to data from the airports website.
The $160 million improvements also included eight new link taxyways and two high-speed runway. The project has been ongoing for two years.
