ICAO Secretary General visits Egypt

The International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) Secretary General Dr Fang Liu visited Egypt last week, where she conducted a range of discussions highlighting the importance of sustainable aviation development.

In talks with Mr Sherif Fathi, Egypt’s Minister of Civil Aviation (above), Dr Liu discussed how Egypt and ICAO could enhance cooperation in support of improved training, capacity building, and aviation safety and security improvements.

In the tourist region of Luxor, Dr Liu met with local Governor Dr Mohamed Badr and explored the potential for increasing Luxor’s aviation connectivity with the significant tourism markets in Europe and Asia, while noting that tourism contributes a substantial 12% to Egyptian GDP.

Dr Liu also met with Ambassador Hisham Badr, Assistant to Egypt’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, covering environmental issues, aviation growth projections and the importance of the Global Market Based Measure (GMBM) for international aviation at ICAO’s 39th Assembly this autumn.

The Secretary General also took time to visit with staff and colleagues at the ICAO MID Regional office in Cairo, where she highlighted some key targets for the Middle East and the resources needed to achieve them.
