According to sources on the island, the multi-million dollar business which was geared up to become a major aerospace employer has ceased to trade and is operating as a “a shell”.
The company’s website has also been suspended.
This leaves doubts about the MRO function for the Gulf Air fleet. Gulf Technics spun out of Gulf Air and was set to assist the national carrier bring its MRO services in house.
The suspension is causing chaos among maintenance and engineering students currently at the Gulf Aviation Academy which had a deal with the Bahraini government to train more than 1,000 aviation students – a third are believed to be training for an MRO role with Gulf Technics.
Local newspaper Gulf Daily News is reporting that some 280 students have sent a letter to some 700 businesses to try to save the company. "Most of us are too poor to sustain ourselves and so we saw this as an opportunity to make our lives better and get a stable career, but it's all ruined," it quoted the student representatives as saying.
The students claim theys should have already completed their theoretical work but delays in the programme have meant they had fallen a year behind.
