ATR tests all electrical aircraft

ATR has tested a prototype of its ATR 72, which aimed to test an all electrical energy management system, and optimise the electrical power distribution.

This is the second test for the prototype, and also tested performance checks on the all electrical air conditioning system.

The flying demonstration is part of the Clean Sky Joint Undertaking (CS JU) programme, with the first green flying demonstration succeeding in July 2015 with the same prototype.

The ‘All Electrical Aircraft’ (AEA) features technologies jointly developed by ATR’s shareholder Finmeccanica, and other CS JU members including Liebherr and Thales.

“The ATR aircraft already have a reputation worldwide for their low fuel burn and their environmental friendliness. Contributing to developing and deploying new technologies for the greener aviation of tomorrow is a key part of ATR’s identity,” said Alessandro Amendola, senior vice-president, engineering, ATR.

The Clean Sky initiative is a measure adopted by the European Parliament to support technologies that encourage clean air transport systems.
