ADFD’s Director General, HE Mohammed Al Suwaidi and the UAE Ambassador to Bahrain, HE Abdul Khouri, were in Manama to witness the country’s Prime Minister HRH Prince Khalifa bin Salman lay the project’s foundation stone.
The US $1.1. billion expansion project, the largest in Bahrain’s civil aviation history, aims to increase the airport’s annual capacity to 14 million passengers to meet anticipated passenger growth and enable the airport to handle the next generation of modem fleets. It includes a new, 201,467 square metre passenger terminal four times the size of the existing terminal, 24 air bridges, airport aprons, departure halls, check-in counters, passport control booths, security lanes, a Duty Free, jetty-served departure gates, passport control booths, e-Gates, baggage reclaim belts and car parks.
The grant is part of a wider AED9.19 billion (US $2.5 billion) grand provided by the UAE in 2013 as part of the ADFD administered Gulf Co-operation Council (GCC) development programme for Bahrain to support development projects in the Kingdom over a decade.
